feeling like a fool aint half bad

Having a party hat on your head with a pin at the top sticking out trying to pop balloons does feel stupid but introducing a competitive element (another player and a time limit) this seems to get that much more interesting

while doing a run through of the game the "magic circle" was also quite blurred, setting our game up in the hallway experimental people could see what we were doing while they might have not know what it was for they already had a fair idea how the game worked just by observation.
It would take little to no effort to explain the rules of the game to someone outside of our group due to its simplicity
The original idea to make the balloon with a marker made the player look hilariously funny as they jumped up and down aiming for the balloon (sorry Amy), however having a balloon pop gave the player a greater sense of achievement (seeing something explode along with a massive loud noise why wouldn't it).

when we tried the game in the elevator we had such high expectations just because i would have liked to have seen other peoples reactions who were not apart of our group but at the same time having a pin on your head and being in an enclosed area making a loud exploding noises seems not to be such a good idea in the end.

at the end of the day if your going to look like a fool make a game out of it and find someone to play with.

"POP ZAT BALLOON"

As you guys are aware we have made several changes to our previous idea, so without further ado, allow me to present Team K’s nearly-there game idea- yes, we are still in need of a name.

We shall still be splitting individuals into two areas, handcuffing the participants, using the balloons and the party hats. However –based on the results that were received- have decided to replace permanent markers with pins, for we have discovered that it was fun to watch, received the most amounts of laughs and was quite exhausting. Furthermore, it also brought about feelings of uncertainty- I suppose you could call it that- as the hats blocked your view and made it difficult to locate the exact position of the balloon; hence causing each burst to be startling…or something along those lines.

In regards to scoring, we have decided to go old school, and select two individuals who will pay close attention to their assigned team and count the number of balloons popped in the given time. For the location, we tried implementing the game in the lift, however- due to the fact that there will pins involved and random balloons popping, have selected the corridor before the games lounge, as it separates the two individuals, yet- as it is see through- allows them to analyse their opponent’s progress and the manner in which they are tackling the challenge etc etc

So yeah, that’s about it. Movie should be posted soon, soo keep your eyes peeled for that.

Kind regards,

Chet

Balloon game

So far, here's how it goes:
  • There will be 2-10 players in two teams
  • They will all wear party hats with a sharpie connected on top so you can draw with the tip of the hat
  • The sharpies will come in two colours. One for each team
  • In a room, the teams will be separated on opposite sides
  • 1-3 white balloons will be thrown in the air and all of the players have to headbutt and therefore mark the balloon/s as much as they can for as long as the game goes
  • At the end of the game the marks on the balloon/s will be counted. The team's colour which shows up most on the balloon/s determines the winner.

Gotta figure out what's a good amount of balloons, players, area and time for this game. Oh, and a name.

New Game idea

This sort of just popped up whilst playing a random online game. the aim of the game is pretty simple, with those participating having to keep the virtual balls in the air, using only their heads. I know swat about implementation but im sure that you could attach a wiimote onto a helmet or something and that way get the individual to jump up and down like fools. I know it sounds a tad childish, but then again our class seems to have a fascination with balloons and keeping them up in the air...so it should manage to engage, as well as grab their attention.

Game Update

Hi everyone, Ok so we really need to get a good solid idea happening this week.
In Floyds class this week we were experimenting with the idea of using remote control cars, which were controlled by drums, a bike or light. The idea was to control these cars with one of the methods and catch the opponents car. Though the problem with this new idea is the extra costs, the time frame and the cars would have to be of a decent size and quite sturdy so if the player was to step on them it wouldn't break.
Soo, my question is are we scratching this idea completely? Going back to improving Larry the boxing bag, OR shall we come up with another idea? If we do, we need to keep it simply and cheap, so possibly using household items?

Game Variation

Hey, just thought id post the idea i had in class today. So instead of having the boxing bag as a memory/music game, we could have the boxing bag (Larry) have a certain amount of health, say 100hp. And then for every time you punch larry it hurts him, depending on how hard you hit.
Larry would then respond to every blow, (possible words or we had an idea of using an elmo doll)
Then the lower the hp gets, the angrier or the more it responds to every hit.
You can play it as a one player or 2 player, and make the game more challenging by shorting the game time, or giving Larry more Hp, so you have to hit the bag more.
Just an idea.

How to Play!

What we've done so far

Hugh thought up the idea of using computer mouses as buttons for the punching bag. They respond well to the computer.

We destroyed a chair to turn it into the punching bag's frame and holder.

A sad alternative if we can't get a projector.

Cellophane...

We're making the bag out of a doggie pillow and bubble wrap.

Testing out the sturdiness.

Now we gotta stick them mouses in the bag and wrap them up.
It's all good.

Game Modes

I have another idea about a way to play the game. Repeating played beats can be x mode and for y mode you can just punch along with the melody in time. But their are no specific places on the boxing bag to hit. Free mode? It'll be good for songs like Chop Suey or what ever.

Meeting

Just wondering if everyone is available to meet up on tuesday sometime, so we can go over the various things that we need to have done by thursday.

lego

Does anyone have any old generic lego bricks I could use to prop up the buttons? I've cannibalized an old mouse to create a target, now i just need something to prop it up with.

Punching Hero

This better be music based. Audio and lights will play the rhythm to punch and kick. I can imagine it: The rhythm of Eye of the Tiger's intro plays and then the actual song starts playing. That's when you gotta punch in time with it. Then simpler rhythms will play throughout the song, and you copy after you hear them.

Ideas in making it:
Instead of putting lights in a punching bag only for them to break, use a projector. There will be 3 big red lights flashing at different times. They'll each cover one section of the bag to hit: top, middle and bottom. I figured three big lights would suit because the bag will move a bit. When the whole bag lights up blue, that means "kick".

click counter proof of concept

Just got a proof of concept uploaded to a friends server.

http://draconius.byethost6.com/thingy.zip

It should open a pair of black windows, one entitled "pygame." Clicking in this window will cause the other window to display the number of clicks.

Hugh

Edit, the adress likes to change itself from "byethost6" to "bytehost6"...

Input

I've been fiddling around with some designs using buttons and an old usb mouse to record the punches.

Essentially, by removing the top of the mouse we gain access to the three buttons, left middle (scroll wheel) and right. We re-wire the mouse, adding lengths of wire in-between the button and the mount, allowing us to position the buttons however we want.

The mouse is connected to a computer, which is running a simple program that records mouse clicks. If a left click is registered in the target area (the application window) a counter will increase. This is the same for the other two buttons, except each has its own counter.

If we remove the trackball/optical tracker from the mouse, we don't have to worry about the impacts moving the cursor out of the window, and we've gained a simple way to track hits on a variety of targets.

Boxing..Bag..

As far as the boxing idea goes, I'm pretty sure we're sticking with it so far. Just last Thursday the main thing we discussed was how we would go about presenting the idea to the class. We're thinking along the lines of our own boxing bag, containing LED lights. I think we are still brainstorming how the bag will be pressure sensitive, and be able to recognize which body parts are coming in contact with the bag. I think we had an idea something to do with a microphone?
But if anyone comes up with a better idea, do let everyone know!
=)!

Finally, I can post! Ok, well to begin this post off i would like to apologise again for not being there, but, at the same time, would also like to remind you that i was as sick as a dog. Anyway, what exactly is happening in terms of the game? Are we still going to keep the previous concept of boxing or has that already been disposed of with and replaced with another?

Aha! I have an idea.

IRL Audio Surf. I'm talking about the Ninja Mono character.
Because it's impossible to make an IRL Audio Surf, the game will end up entirely different. But it's a good place to start. Gotta think about if the player will be on a field or on a treadmill? Will they be dodging crap or running into things? How the hell is this gunna work out? Can't be bothered thinking at the moment, so I'll get back to this.

...

Well it has been stated that "simplicity is the key to brilliance"...so yeah. Yet, since this is Floyd we are talking about i suppose such does not apply. Um, question who exactly are we targetting? Dancers? regular folk? animals? athletes? It may not mean much, but it could be of some help as it will help us narrow down ideas, until we have concepts that we are all happy with. Depending on whether we wish to do it this or not, it may also enable us to think of ways that we can take a really dull task- that applies to the audience- and make it into a gaming concept that is one of its kind and fun. Lol, sorta brings to mind the display at the experimenta where that guy took 'hunting' to the next level- man that was genius.

Brainstorming?

I guess I'll talk about my favourite exertion games for some inspiration and ideas.
My favourite games would have to be the dancing and other music related ones (if they count). Because music > sport. Yeah, I like my music. It makes everything fun. Examples of some dancing games are DDR, EZ 2 Dancer and that para para one.

Random traits about these games:
  • When playing these games, you're pressured to keep in beat with the music which makes you work harder to keep up your endurance.
  • You'll only be good at them if you've practised a lot. If you haven't, you'll look like a tard.
  • They are "show off" games.
  • You can mod them to play your favourite songs and personalize it. Also, this adds more variety and less repetition
  • (IMO) in comparison to other games, guys are more attractive when skillfully playing these sort of games.
It would be cool if a computer game could monitor ALL of your body movements unlike this. And like, you have your own little character which is an idol that has to dance and stuff. Actually, there probably is a game like that. Too bad we can't use a screen.

tl;dr, dancing and music would be nice.

I'm done. Pardon me if I failed at English.
